Find Great Deals on Designer Duds in Aspen

Score some Gucci, Dior and couture galore at these luxury consignment and thrift shops in this resort ski town.

It makes sense that one of the most expensive places to live in the world would have great cast-offs. While you may not want to miss window-shopping at Chanel or eyeing the Fendi fur collection, take your shopping dollars where they count: consignment stores.

Aspen, it turns out, has several second-hand, consignment and thrift shops where the fabulously wealthy divest themselves of last-season’s goods, ranging from top-notch ski gear to fabulous designer cocktail dresses. The popular Gracy’s of Aspen closed its doors in late 2007 after more than 30 years in business, but there remain several other options, including a new store. Here are ones you shouldn’t pass up:

Aspen Home Consignment

One of Aspen’s quaint Victorian homes is stuffed to the rafters with classic furnishings and accessories. Skip the new stuff and head for the used goods section, which sports much more realistic prices.

202 E. Main St., Aspen. Tel. 970-925-1870. Open Mon. to Fri. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

The Aspen Thrift Shop

This second-hand store touts itself as Aspen’s oldest and largest. It certainly has an extensive collection. Savvy shoppers can choose from women’s, men’s and children’s clothing as well as skiwear. This is definitely the place to find once-pricey ski duds at great prices. Most of the shop’s income goes back to the community to support small, nonprofit organizations.

312 E. Hyman Ave., Aspen. Tel. 970-925-3121. Open Mon. to Sat. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus Tues. 4 to 7 p.m.

Susie’s Limited

Expect to pay a bit more, but here you can find some designer treasures, including a $6,000 full-length fur coat (originally priced in the high $30s, so it does seem like a bargain!). Susie’s has lots of fun clothing, accessories, sportswear, shoes and jewelry. Additionally, a nearby second location of the store has furniture and home accessories.

623 E. Hopkins Ave., Aspen. Tel. 970-920-2376. Open daily 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Little Bird

Opened by local Keeley Lloyd in summer 2007, The Little Bird is a high-end vintage boutique featuring both luxury consignment and original designs in women’s clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and more. Lloyd custom designs vintage belts and carries Angela Horton Cashmere designs.

205 S. Mill St., Suite 221A, Aspen. Tel. 970-920-3830. Open Tues. to Sat., noon to 5 p.m.
