Cabo Spa Vacation

Take a wellness vacation for your body and soul in Los Cabos.

Fresh ocean air, desert botanicals and 360 days of sun make Los Cabos—which includes San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas—a perfect health and wellness destination. Yoga, massage, spa treatments, fitness centers and organic foods make for life-changing family bonding opportunities lasting longer than any souvenir.

Cabo’s Health and Wellness Resort

A stay at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, the health and wellness resort in Cabo San Lucas, makes planning your healthy vacation an ocean breeze. A trained wellness specialist will customize a treatment path by emphasizing either fitness, health or relaxation for everyone in your family. Healing ingredients from desert and sea are the foundation for the spa’s signature holistic treatments.

Native plants and flowers flank reflecting pools on the serene hotel grounds, with zen-inspired interior themes. Luxuriate in the spa’s six treatment rooms, steam, sauna, cold plunge, Watsu pool and Swiss shower room.

At the beachside Temazcal steam room, participate in a traditional sweat lodge ritual said to unlock creativity and enhance spirituality through direct contact with nature. To feed body as well as soul, the resort restaurant Siempre offers both healthy and splurge menus featuring organic fresh ingredients. Healthy Eating

Speaking of food, an organic farm north of San José supplies fresh, wholesome foods to select restaurants. You can purchase the farm’s fresh produce at the San José del Cabo Organic Market, open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the San José Jockey Club. On Sundays, visit the La Playa Organic and Artisan Market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., next to the church in La Playita. Check with your hotel concierge for directions.

Los Cabos Hotel Spas

Other hotels and resorts in Los Cabos offer spa experiences to delight parents and their older children. Spa Oasis, at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in San José del Cabo was renovated and reopened in February 2008 with additional treatment rooms and a new salon. Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, the spa features foot reflexology, enzymatic sea mud packs and desert sage smudging, in addition to traditional spa services. At the Esperanza in Cabo San Lucas, meander through plunge pools, gardens, steam caves and waterfalls. Private consultations in the full-service fitness center will focus your family’s wellness experience. Esperanza, tel +52-624-145-6400. www.esperanzaresort.com

Spa services go mobile at Las Ventanas in San José del Cabo, where you can take Ayurvedic treatments, wraps and facials aboard the resort’s private 55-foot yacht. Las Ventanas, tel. +52-624-144-2800. www.lasventanas.com

Hot Rocks Treatments

One of the best off-site massage options is Hot Rocks Massage in San José. My daughter and I unwound there with deep tissue massages and hot rocks therapy at prices that didn’t break the bank. They’ll also do house calls and hotel service. Location: Km. 28 of the tourist corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, in Plaza Costa Azul. Tel. +52-624-142-2296.

You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy the professional services at the new Sea Spa and Salon at the Cabo Surf Hotel in San José del Cabo. Try the Tranquil Spirit package, with mud tub treatment, lavender hand and foot “facials,” hot rock treatments and massage. Choose the couples’ room if you want a side-by-side experience. Cabo Surf Hotel, tel +52-624-142-2666. www.cabosurfhotel.com

Beachside Yoga and Walks

Yoga on the beach gets the day off to a great start. Many hotels have instructors, and if not, they can call one who gives private lessons on site.

Beach walks are another great natural therapy, and the price can’t be beat. Costa Azúl is my favorite beach to walk along. My daughter and I love skipping through waves, watching pelicans dive, climbing over tide-worn rocks and spotting for whales while gulping in ocean-fresh air and enjoying a great workout.

If you're looking for a yoga retreat or yoga vacation in the Cabo area, then take a look at Prana del Mar ( ) - a retreat and wellness center on the Pacific coast that is dedicated specifically to retreats. It's a beachfront resort that's off the beaten path in a very serene and tranquil location. Wonderful accommodations, deluxe amenities, delicious food, and welcoming staff. Worth exploring before it gets discovered!

Cabo Spas are a big yes! I love Pueblo Bonito Pacifica! I went there last spring for a "relaxation vacation" and had an amazing time.

Time for a massage! This article made me pick up the phone to make a massage appointment. A spa trip to Mexico is the next step.
