It Takes a Village

Find discounts and more at luxury brand powerhouses at nine outlet villages near Europe’s top cities.

You love to travel. You love to shop. You love a bargain. Combine all three if you happen to find yourself in Europe this holiday season and still have gifts to buy (even if they’re for yourself—sshh, we won’t tell).

While most major European cities aren’t exactly known for their affordable stores, even with a stronger dollar against the British pound and euro, Chic Outlet Shopping Villages, located just outside nine major European cities, offer deals on designer clothes and labels at up to 60 percent off. These premier outlets differ from their U.S. counterparts in that they often are next to historic sites, luxury hotels, spas, museums and fine-dining restaurants, so you can make a full day (or more) out of the excursion. Check out the Shopping Breaks section of the company’s site for ideas.

Another terrific benefit? They all offer tax-free shopping.

Where can you find these vaunted village outlets? London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, Frankfurt, Dublin and Brussels. Each is open-air, for a Main-Street feel, with anywhere from 55 to 100 or more luxury or upscale boutiques, plus cafés and restaurants, and easy-access public transportation. Here’s a peek at what to find at each one, should you decide to visit these village outlets for your next European fashion fix.

London – Bicester Village

Alexander McQueen, Hugo Boss and Christian Lacroix are just a few of the 30 new high-end boutiques that opened just in time for holiday shopping at London’s Bicester Village, joining other such luxury lines as Dunhill, Aquascutum and Nicole Farhi. Also new in town? An outpost of Villandry, the venerable London restaurant. Bicester is located near Oxford.

Paris – La Vallée Village

For the consummate Sex and the City gal, you can now get Jimmy Choo shoes at 60 percent off at La Vallée Village, located just 35 minutes from the city center. Integrate shopping with a gastronomic private tour and taste of champagne at nearby Les Caves Des Moet and Chandon. Or, if traveling as a family, have dad take the kids to EuroDisney, next door.

Milan – Fidenza Village

Receive an extra 10 percent off at the villages—which includes Frette, Versace, Trussardi Jeans and Furla outlets—when arriving on “Fidenza Village Express,” a daily round-trip service from the center of Milan and associated hotels. Located near Parma and the beautiful Salsomaggiore Terme spa.

Madrid – Las Rozas Village

Pick up last-season’s collections from Spanish designers Antonio Miro, Andrés Sardá and Pedro del Hierro, leather goods from Loewe, and discounts on Petit Bateau, Burberry, Tag Heuer and more at Las Rozas Village, located 30 minutes outside Madrid near the San Lorenzo de El Escorial monastery. Start your day early with a visit to Segovia and its ancient Roman aqueduct, to the north. For lunch try the cochonillo—roast suckling pig—the regional specialty.

Barcelona – La Roca Village

La Roca Village is 40 minutes outside Barcelona toward the Costa Brava, near the converted 18th-century farmhouse Mas de Torrent Hotel, as well as the Dalí Theatre Museum at Figueres. Boutiques include Spanish leather brands Loewe and Farrutx, Adolfo Dominguez, Burberry, Custo Barcelona, Nanos, Catimini, La Perla and more. Closed Sundays.

Brussels – Maasmechelen Village

Peruse more than 150 designer labels at Maasmechelen Village, situated an hour from both Brussels and Antwerp. Local brands include Scapa, Rena Lange and Laurèl. Other boutiques: Féraud Paris, Fornarina, Nike, Pringle of Scotland. You can’t leave without picking up some Belgian chocolates at either Leonidas or the Chocolate House Boon in nearby Hasselt.

Frankfurt – Wertheim Village

Wertheim Village, near Frankfurt, is along the famous Romantic Road from gorgeous Würzburg to Füssen in the Alps. After enjoying deals at Aigner, Balderrarini, Strenesse, Bally, Oakley, Lacoste and Samsonite, tour the Castle of Wertheim, dine at Schloss Hotel Steinburg, or relax at the stunning Ascara Spa at the Kempinski Hotel Falkenstein. Closed Sundays.

Munich – Ingolstadt Village

Over near Munich, in the heart of Bavaria, Ingolstadt Village has more than 85 boutiques. Find fine china and tableware at Rosenthal, or pick up deals on classic and sophisticated wares from Aigner, Fred Perry, MCM and Wolford. The Marc Aurel Spa and Golf Resort is nearby. Closed Sunday.

Dublin – Kildare Village

The newest of the shopping villages, Kildare Village opened in 2006, an hour southwest of Dublin in thoroughbred horse-breeding County Kildare. Also nearby is the K Club, host to the 2006 Ryder Cup. Boutiques include Bally, Thomas Pink, Le Creuset, LK Bennett, Karen Millen, Ted Baker, Monsoon, Radley and more.
