Tucson, Arizona Vacation Planning

This southwest city in southern Arizona is great for family vacations as well as those looking for historical, spa, golf or culinary retreats.

I’m a big fan of the Southwest region of the United States. I love the weather, the landscape, the history, the people, the vibe (yes, the Native Americans were on to something in terms of being able to feel a certain spirituality in the place) and, of course, the cuisine. And Tucson offers some of the best of all this, and more.

Later this month, the sixth annual 2008 Tucson Culinary Festival takes place Oct. 23 to 26, featuring the third annual World Margarita Tasting championship, among other tastings and foodie events. Had I known about this little competition sooner, I might have made Tucson travel plans to attend the soiree! The event takes place at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, which is offering $189 per night rates during the festival.

Food festival aside, local Lynn O’Rourke Hayes shares her experiences of this southwestern getaway. In her Tucson feature, Hayes highlights the best of where to stay and what to do and see while in the Old Pueblo. She proves that the days of the Old West and cowboys aren’t just in the past in her rincon ranches article.

The area also is known for its golf and spas, but those aren’t the only activities in the region either. Watch the annual migration of the sandhill crane en masse during the Wings over Willcox event, or explore underground Tucson in our caving article. To round-out our coverage, native Kim Westerman recommends her favorite non-Sonoram Mexican restaurants in this week Taste Buds column.
